- The paper "To Search or to Crawl? Towards a Query Optimizer for
Text-Centric Tasks," by Panos Ipeirotis, Eugene Agichtein, Pranay
Jain, and Luis Gravano, received the "Best Paper" Award at the
SIGMOD 2006 Conference. SIGMOD is a premier database and data
management research conference; SIGMOD 2006 received 446 research
paper submissions, out of which 58 (or 13%) were accepted for
publication.
- James Gardner has been awarded a Google Summer of Code 2006. He
will be enhancing the Planetmath Auto-linker. More details can be

- Dr. Eugene
Agichtein will join the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science, starting Fall 2006. His research interest
includes information management and retrieval, and text mining
and information extraction. Dr. Agichtein received his PhD in
2005 from Columbia, and is a postdoctoral researcher at
Microsoft.
- Li Xiong is a co-organizer of the Healthcare Information and
Knowledge Management Workshop, co-located with the Conference of
Information and Knowledge Management in Washington D.C. For more

- Kim Gernert and James Lu have received funding from the university
to design a new, introductory graduate course on Computational
and Life Sciences.
- Johnny Healey won the best student paper award at the 2006 ACM
Southeast Conference for his paper "Yaccscript: A Platform for
Intersecting High-Level Languages". A picture of the award
