Summary
The topics presented here only scratch the surface in terms of breadth,
analysis, and scientific software abilities. In particular, notably absent
is the numerical topics of implicit methods, stability and convergence.
For an introductory exposition on some of these topics, the reader is referred
to chapter 9 of each of the texts by [1]
and [11]. For an introduction to Matlab-specific
software aspects of numerical differential equations, see chapter 9 of
[15]. Users looking for extended functionality
of the Mathematica routines are refer to [17]
or to [9]. Users looking for related
topics using Maple are referred to the alternate version of Coombes et.
al., [8].
Analytical aspects of the initial-value problem can
be found in elementary texts on differential equations such as [18,
5] and [4].
More in-depth analysis of the numerical issues presented here can be found
in the texts by [3, 7,
13, 12].
Further consideration given to specifics aspects of methods or more specific
details than presented here may be found in the well-rounded texts, [16,
14, 13,
6, 10,
7] and [12].
