Mathematics MS

The Department also offers a M.S. in Mathematics. The degree is suited for those with an undergraduate degree in mathematics. Those obtaining the degree may pursue careers in industry or enter a Ph.D. program in Mathematics. There are no tuition or stipend awards for this degree program.

Requirements

Students admitted to the program, in full standing, should have the equivalent of an undergraduate degree in mathematics.

  1. Six courses in mathematics, at least five at the graduate level. Two of the following major sequences must be included:
    • Math 511 & 512: Complex Analysis & Integration Theory
    • Math 515 & 516: Numerical Analysis I & II
    • Math 521 & 522: Algebra I & II
    • Math 531 & 532: Graph Theory I & II
    • Math 535 & 536: Combinatorics I & II
    • Math 543 & 544: Algebraic Topology I & II
    • Math 545 & 546: Intro. to Differential Geometry I & II
    • Math 555 & 556: Intro. to Applied Analysis I & II
  2. An acceptable thesis and oral defense.

Degree by Candidacy

Students enrolled in the Mathematics PhD program may also obtain their Masters degree by Candidacy by completing the following requirements:

  1. Completing the coursework required for the PhD degree
  2. Passing the written comprehensive examinations for the PhD degree
  3. Being admitted to candidacy
