Atlanta Lecture Series in Combinatorics and Graph Theory X
November 2-3, 2013
Emory University, Georgia Tech and Georgia State University, with support from the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation, will host a series of 9 new mini-conferences from 2013-2016. The 10th of these mini-conferences will be held at Emory University on November 2-3, 2013. The conferences will stress a variety of areas and feature one prominent researcher giving 2 fifty minute lectures and 4 outstanding researchers each giving one fifty minute lecture. There will also be several 25 minute lecturers by younger reseachers or graduate students. All talks will be held in room W201 of the Mathematics and Science Center.

Vojtech Rodl to give invited plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014.
Published Date: 2013-09-09
Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor Vojtech Rodl has been invited to deliver a plenary address at the International Congress of Mathematics (ICM) in Seoul, Korea in August 2014. Dr. Rodl has previously given a regular invited address at ICM 1990 in Kyoto, Japan. It was already an honor, but being invited to give a plenary address is more so: only about 20 mathematics are selected to give an address at each quadrennial conference. The ICM is the largest conference of mathematics and is hosted by the International Mathematical Union. The most prestigious recognitions, including the Fields Medal, are awarded at this event, in which the most important research contributions are presented by leading mathematicians.
Dr. Rodl joins Dr. Raman Parimala who has given both an invited talk (ICM 1994, Zurich) and plenary talk (ICM 2010 Hyderabad) and Dr. Suresh Venapally who gave an invited talk at ICM 2010.

Ken Ono stars in docudrama on an Indian mathematician
Published Date: 2013-04-30
Ken Ono, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics, stars in the flm "The genius of Srinivasa Ramanujan". (Internet movie database link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2861842/). The docudrama features well-known number theorists from around the world associated with Ramanujan's oeuvre, most notably A. Raghuram and Ken Ono. Shot at various locations in Chennai, Namakkal, Kumbakonam, Erode, and Cambridge, this documentary highlights the trajectory of Ramanujan's seminal work and its relevance today. His scientific legacy continues to grow well beyond anything that previous generations of mathematicians could have ever imagined. 2012 was declared the the "National Year of Mathematics" in India to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the great mathematician Ramanujan. Professor Ono will be making many appearances at screenings in the next year including showings at Harvard, MIT, Cambridge University, Oxford University, and the Joint Meetings of the American Mathematical Societies.

If you're like many people, when someone says "math" you think "problem." A head-scratching homework assignment maybe, or an equation on a whiteboard (or blackboard, depending on your age). Possibly a problem with a required course, if mathematics didn't happen to be your forte.
Mathematicians think about such things a little differently. And the problems they think about might surprise you.

Maymester Course this Summer entitled "Partial Differential Equations in Action: from medical images to numerical simulations"
Published Date: 2013-02-19
Dr. Veneziani will give a Maymester Course this Summer entitled "Partial Differential Equations in Action: from medical images to numerical simulations". The course will be held from May 14 to 31 and will introduce motivated students to Partial Differential Equations from a practical standpoint. The reference application will be given by cardiovascular physiology and pathology quantitatively analyzed by solving partial differential equations for blood flow and electrocardiology. The course includes lectures from Dr. Samady (CathLab - Emory Hospital), Dr. Tong (Neurosurgery) and visits to the Emory SPECT and MRI facilities (Dr. Garcia and Oshinski). More information can be found here or downloaded here. Dr. Veneziani will also give a course for high-school students in August called "Foundation of Mathematical Modeling".
