Assignment for Thu, 10/08: ------------------------- We as humans have some sense of the purpose of Asimov's three laws. Are they infallible in upholding this purpose? (1) Develop a scenario in which the tree laws don't work as their architects might have intended. Think of this as a debugging exercise. (2) Propse a fix for scenarios like the one you discovered. (3) Can you now find a flaw in your modified versions of the laws? I'd like written discussions of the above turned in. Also please use a scenario other than one human killing another, since we mentioned this in class. ------------------------- -We had a quiz over the _I, Robot_ reading today. -We saw a short clip from show, The Big Bang Theory. -Discussion about I, Robot: -Other dilemmas caused by Fundamental Laws -Poll them on how they feel about Gloria's relationship to Robbie; is it weird to them? -Are Gloria's emotions towards Robbie "real"? (in general, emotional attachment to nonliving things) -Might compare to unrequited love -- is it real if reciprocation doesn't occur? -Are such emotions healthy? -Does Robbie portray emotions? -If so, are they "real"? -Is Robbie capable of emotions? -Define "real" -Can "floating heads" have real emotions? -How about cloned brains endowed with artificial sensors? -How about synthetically constructed brains...? -Use Runaround to discuss complex systems and unexpected behavior -Three laws discussion -Is contradiction possible? -Compare to programming (distill some goal into a precise representation) (i.e. things rarely work as we expect them to, even for simple systems) -Contrast Powell and Donovan and what they represent
