· We will also read papers on advanced database topics from recent database literature. They will be posted on the class web page.

· Database Management Systems, Third Edition, Ramakrishnan, Gehrke
· Fundamentals of Database Systems, 5th Edition, Elmasri, Navathe
Overview: This is a second course in database systems. Database system implementation as well as advanced database concepts and emerging database applications will be covered. Topics include: data storage and indexing, query execution, database recovery, transaction concurrency control, distributed databases, and database security and privacy.
Prerequisite: An introductory level course in Database Systems.
Grading Policy:
There will be reading, written and programming assignments, a midterm exam, and a final course project. There is no final exam. The course grade will be determined by a weighted average of all the graded items as below.
Class participation: 10%
Assignments: 30%
Midterm exam: 30%
Final project: 30%
