US News & World Report for 2006 ranked Emory #18 in the nation for undergraduate education amongst doctoral-granting instutitions.
The Emory math department offers PhD's and MS's in mathematics. As of 1 March 06, there were 49 undergraduate math majors and an additional 42 majors combined in math-econ, math-CS, and math-polisci.
Emory is an NCAA Division III school. Somehow Emory has two mascots: the sports teams use Swoop, an eagle, and the university uses Dooley, a human skeleton.
Emory was founded in 1836 by the Methodist church and is named after a popular bishop who died in a carriage accident in 1835. It now has few obvious ties to the church, although 1/7th of the Board of Trustees consists of bishops or provosts in the church.
