Grading:

  • homework                    10%
  • three midterm exams    20% each
  • the final                        30%
  • Homework assignments: There will be about ten homework assignments, for each of them you can get 0, 0.5, or 1 point.

    Exams:  There will be three in-class closed book midterm exams. Tentative dates: Sept. 28, Oct.31, Dec.7.

    Final: Thursday, Dec 14, 4:30 - 7:00 PM, W201.

    Exam policy: No books allowed, but at the midterm exams you may have one 5 by 8 in. card filled (both sides) with any information you want. For the final exam you may use three such cards.

      Build two sequences of H's (heads) and T's (tails) of 29 letters each. For the first sequence just write down some H's and T's (29 of them altogether) in what you consider a `random' manner. The second sequence should be a `truly random' sequence you can generate either by flipping a coin, or tossing a die, or using a random number generator in you calculator, or Table XII in your textbook. Copy both these sequences to your notes; we will need them later on.    solutions
